Check-in & Baggage at Hamburg Airport

Hamburg Airport is compact and well-organised – a relaxed start to your holiday. Terminals 1 and 2 are directly connected via the central Airport Plaza, so all check-in desks, shops and restaurants are under one roof. Knowing which terminal your airline uses saves time.

Terminals & airline allocation

  • Terminal 1: used by Eurowings among others, as well as airlines such as British Airways and Air France.
  • Terminal 2: home to Lufthansa and other Star Alliance partners as well as numerous charter airlines.

Terminal assignments can change – it is best to check the terminal on your ticket or on hamburg-airport.de shortly before your trip.

Use online check-in

Most airlines offer online check-in from 24 to 48 hours before departure. This way you receive your boarding pass conveniently on your smartphone and, if you have hand luggage only, go straight to security.

Baggage drop-off & tips

Allow enough time

For flights within Europe you should be at the terminal around 2 hours before departure, and around 3 hours before for long-haul flights. You drop off checked baggage at your airline's desk or – where available – at the automated baggage drop-off machine.

Observe hand luggage rules

Size and weight of hand luggage as well as the liquids rule vary depending on the airline and fare. A quick look at the conditions of carriage before departure avoids surprises at the security check.
